Tip of the Day Archive
Here are some recent tips of the day.

Be Neutral.
If you drive a car with a standard transmission in a hilly area, put it in neutral and coast down long hills to save gas. Do NOT try this with a heavily loaded pickup truck or a vehicle with bad brakes! And if the engine is fuel-injected it is more efficient to put it into a high gear than into neutral.

Catch Some Air.
You may be able to improve your fuel mileage a little (about 1 to 1.5 miles per gallon) by having your tire shop inflate your tires with pure nitrogen instead of with air.

Running Your Bank Account Dry.
Thinking about installing a pool? Keep your money and get a membership to the Y instead. Sharing a public pool uses less water than numerous private pools.

Plant a Tree.
More specifically, plant a native species of deciduous shade tree, such as a sugar maple or a beech, outside your south-facing windows. In the summer, the shade will help keep your home cool. In the winter the tree will lose its leaves and allow the sunlight to come in and help warm your home.

Slow Down.
This summer, skip the Ski-Doo and discover the beauties of Maine's lakes from a canoe or kayak. You won't emit greenhouse gases and you avoid the risk of contaminating the water with petroleum products.
